Melvin officially joins Padres organization
Former D-backs manager to evaluate Minor League system
MLB Alumni News
SAN DIEGO -- As reported on Monday, former Arizona manager Bob Melvin has accepted a job as an adviser to Padres general manager Kevin Towers.
The hire became official on Thursday and Melvin, who was at PETCO Park on Monday and Tuesday meeting with Towers, will work with Minor League catchers and evaluate the Padres' Minor League system.
The 47-year-old Melvin -- relieved of his duties on May 8 after spending the past four-plus seasons in Arizona -- was the 2007 National League Manager of the Year. He was let go after the D-backs' disappointing start.
Melvin, who went 337-340 in Arizona, was let go even though he was under contract through the 2010 season.
In San Diego, Melvin is reunited with Padres CEO Jeff Moorad and team president Tom Garfinkel, both of whom were in Arizona as recently as last season.
This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.
